Oooh, what time is it?Time to get up as we need to be at Sonneti school by 10.00 for the prize-giving.As we arrive the ceremony is well underway. There’s much excitement, parents are there and the students entertain us with singing, dancing and drama.
Prize-giving time.Once again we’re invited to present some prizes and are so proud as Julius and brother Japhet gained first and second place, they both scored over 400 points in their national mock exams. If they repeat this performance in the real thing they will qualify to attend one of the five national schools in the country.
No time to waste (boy I’m tired), back to TurtleBay for the staff raffle.Everyone’s excited most of them to win the first prize of a bicycle or mobile phone. What the staff don’t know is that thanks to guest donations, there are actually three bikes and three phones as main prizes, this just goes to show how much they are appreciated. The raffle goes really well and over 50 prizes are won, many of them cash.

Kitsao, the third bicycle winner, was working in the restaurant when his ticket was picked, so Bob cycles down to him, he has no idea, and presents him with his prize, he’s quite overwhelmed.Bob and Sue, thanks so much for organising this event, it’s wonderful.Still more excitement to come - our friends Siw and Natalie are due to arrive at any moment. They’ve spent a week on safari with steenboksafaris and we can’t wait to see them.Just heard that they’re here and dash up to their room to greet them.Oh it’s so good to see them again. We’ve a lot of catching up to do.They had a good safari and saw nearly everything, even cheetah (no comment).Still, they didn’t get the leopard.
5th August
You can probably guess that we’re all pretty fatigued to decide on the plan for today – no plan.We take a lounger by the sea, go for water aerobics, I fall for it every time and think “oh, a nice bit of exercise” and forget that I ache all over at the end, can’t feel my arms now.Still it’s good for me, apparently.Good fun too.Agy has not learned his lesson from the other day and organised another practise session of touch rugby. My contribution is to watch and take photographs. He must be mad, now he’s playing water polo.Still, I won’t have much trouble from his this evening. Traditional trip to Ocean Sports for drinkies, Nigel joins us and we have a great laugh before returning to TurtleBay for dinner. We round off the evening with pina colada (here we go again) and a bit of mischief.

6th August
It’s another beautiful day.Momentum is going now so why not go for another session of water aerobics?Great.Actually, that seemed much easier today, must be getting fitter (I wish). How about a seafood buffet up at Ocean Sports?Tide’s coming up as we trundle (that word belongs to my brother) across the beach so have to paddle in places.Mmmm, food is delicious, we sample Mida Creek oysters – they’re tiny, almost like cockles and very good, fantastic Lamu crab claws, some sort of fish called changu which is absolutely delicious and of course no seafood dish would be complete without good old prawns.Back at TurtleBay and those people from Bombolulu are here for a fashion show and more wonderful designs.
7th August
When we were at Silverstone last week, the head teacher announced that although the school is officially closed for the month of August, they would keep it open for a couple of weeks for any pupil who wished to come along for extra tuition. So I’m going along today (in principle to teach but you can always learn something).A lovely family are accompanying me and they’ve had the brilliant idea of taking photographs of each pupil, noting their name and arranging for children in their school in the UK to correspond with them.We have a great time taking photos and the children are very amused when they see themselves on camera.Lesson time and today we are learning the numbers in French from 11 to 30.
Oh no, arrived back at Turtle Bay and it’s bucketing down with rain, hope this stops soon. No, still going on and looks like it won’t let up.We had arranged to visit Hemingways next door for afternoon tea but it won’t be much fun and the sandwiches will be very soggy so we’ll have a trip to the local supermarket instead.
